Sir Goerge Wombwell fought in the Crimean War at the Battle of Balaclava 25 October 1854.  He was a lieutenant in the 17th Lancers and Orderly Officer to Lord Cardigan (brother-in-law to Lord Lucan).  in the Charge of the Light Brigade up the Valley of Death.  His horse was shot from under him and he mounted another.  He was one of the few to make it through all the lines of cannons that faced them.  He was captured by the Russians, who were very pleased with themselves and preferred to chat and smoke than watch over their prisoners.  George mounted a third horse but the horses had done all they could and he ended up walking back behind British lines to a muster of 195 men out of the whole Brigade of 673. He was given leave to attend to his father's death.

George was later promoted to a lieutenancy in the Blues, part of the Household Cavalry.

Marie Sophie was the daughter of Auguste Pierre de Lauret (1810-1881), of the Court of Charles X of France, who emigrated to New South Wales, via England, in the 1840s and eventually bought the Wynella estate.

After her first husband, James Dalglish died, she came to England and married William Bellasis. She financed the rental of large properties such as Lulworth Castle in Wiltshire, that was later destroyed by fire but still stands; and Sundorne Castle in Shropshire that was later raised to the ground for tax reasons. They used Sundorne to help soldiers recuperate from their injuries during the Great War, in which they lost three of their own sons and a son-in-law.

She honoured the Bellasis family's close association with the Oratorian Fathers by financing the central dome of the Brompton Oratory.

"Gribble, who died in 1894 aged forty-seven, had greatly regretted the failure to construct his outer dome. (ref. 92)  The want was, in a manner, supplied when ‘a Client of Saint Philip’ (Mrs. Dalglish-Bellasis  (ref. 93) ) offered to pay for it on the saint's tercentenary in 1895. The design was to be provided by the architect George Sherrin, who in 1894 had suggested an alternative domical finish to the flanking towers, (ref. 94)  but the lantern was designed by his young assistant, E. A. Rickards (Plate 37a). (ref. 95)  The steel-framed dome was built in 1895–6 to the silhouette, higher and steeper than Gribble had proposed, which shows so effectively from some of the quiet streets north of the Brompton Road."

Her benificence extended to discrete payments for the education of a poor boy for each of her five sons. (Courtesy Michael Goldschmidt)

Marie Sophie's sister, Anne Maria, married Edward Percy Simpson.

Marie Sophie's most striking feature was her jet black hair, the colour of which she mostly retained upto her death.

Capt. Philip Joseph BELLASIS [scrapbook] was born in 1893. He died on 24 Aug 1916 in Delville Wood, Longueval, France.

Wounded at Hooge 1915 Killed in action at Delville Wood, France

Served in the First World War with 5th Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry.

Extract from The Tablet - 9 September 1916
We regret also to have to record the death, on the field of honour, of Captain Philip Bellasis, at the age of twenty-three. The youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Dalglish-Bellasis, of Sundorne Castle, Shrewsbury, he matriculated at Merton College, Oxford, in the Lent Term of 1913, after receiving his early education at St. Anthony's, Eastbourne, and the Oratory School. He volunteered in the early days of the war, and received a commission in the Shropshire Light Infantry almost immediately. A year later he was wounded at Hooghe by a splinter from a shell and invalided home. He rejoined his regiment at the Front in April of the present year, and was killed in the fighting of the 24th of August. In the words of a young brother-officer he was struck by a fragment of shell "while gallantly leading his men from the German second line to the third, death being instantaneous. . . . We were all proud of him as our company commander, and everyone is cut up at his death." One of the chaplains, writing to his father, says :-" You have lost a noble son, deeply devoted to you, and we a delightful friend, beloved and respected by all, officers and men - a soldier with the spirit of the Crusaders, brave as a lion, and pious as a child. His example in camp was a sermon to officers and men."
